A few years ago, on the day of May 5th, 2000, the 1st International Free Software Forum (1o. Forum Internacional Software Livre 2000) took place at the beautiful city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Many distinguished Free Software speakers and specialists were invited from different parts of Brazil and the world, including Richard Stallman (rms), founding member of the Free Software Foundation and original author of centerpiece programs for the GNU project, such as EMACS and gcc.

Hace algunos años, el 5 de Mayo del 2000, tuvo lugar el 1er Forum Internacional de Software Libre 2000 en la hermosa ciudad de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul en Brasil. Muchos distinguidos ponentes y especialistas del Software Libre fueron invitados de distintas partes de Brasil y del mundo, incluyendo Richard Stallman (rms), miembro fundador de la Free Software Foundation y autor original de programas centrales del proyecto GNU, como son EMACS y gcc.

Since my early days of participation in the Free Software movement, I have had the luck of listening to Richard Stallman's speeches several times, and since the first occasion, I've always been convinced that this speech, "The Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux Operating System", is a must for every Free Software user, as it explains in a very clear way the real motivations behind our movement.

Desde mis primeros días de participación en el movimiento del Software Libre, he tenido la suerte de escuchar las pláticas de Richard Stallman en diversas ocasiones, y desde la primera vez, he estado siempre convencido de que esta plática, "El movimiento del Software Libre y el sistema operativo GNU/Linux", es una obligada para todo usuario de Software Libre, porque explica de manera muy clara los motivos reales detrás de nuestro movimiento.

Having participated at this congress in Porto Alegre, I recieved a disc which contains a RealVideo file with most of rms' speech. Our first reaction was to project the video at the science faculty, and this we did, but only with mild success, because people here in Mexico do not have a good enough level of English to watch a 2 hour video of continuous monologue with little visual context to help up with, even when the speech is given by an articulate and pased speaker such as Richard Stallman.

Habiendo participado en este congreso de Porto Alegre, recibí un disco que contenía un archivo RealVideo con casi toda la plática de rms. Nuestra primer reacción fue la de proyectar el video en la facultad de ciencias, y esto fue lo que hicimos, pero sólo con un éxito moderado, porque la gente aqui en México no tiene un nivel de Inglés lo suficientemente bueno como para ver un video de 2 horas contínuas de monólogo con poco contexto visual para ayudar, aun cuando la plática es realizada por un ponente tan articulado y pausado como Richard Stallman.

The need for subtitling was obvious, as we started our first video show with an almost-full auditorium and ended up with only a 25 percent of occupied seats. People really wanted to watch the video, but most got frustrated and eventually quit.

La necesidad de subtítulos era obvia, ya que comenzamos nuestra primer exposición del video con un auditorio casi lleno y terminamos solo con un 25 porciento de asientos ocupados. La gente realmente quería ver el video, pero la mayoría se sintió frustrada y finalmente renunciaron.

Because the video was transfered to a VHS cassette for our first projection, I decided to look for a volunteer that would translate and add the subtitles directly on the tape using a specialized machine, but the years passed and a couple of people promised to work on such a task, but with no results.

Debido a que el video fue transferido a un VHS para nuestra primer proyección, decidí buscar un voluntario que tradujera y agregara subtítulos directamente a la cinta usando una máquina especializada, pero los años pasaron y un par de gentes prometieron trabajar en dicha tarea, pero sin resultados.

Eventually, I found out that a digital video file could be added with subtitles in a trivial way: no special hardware was needed. Since I had been unable to find anyone to undertake the task, I decided to do this project myself, and after a few months of spare time (and sometimes not so spare) working, I finished the task and now we are ready to bring this speech to every corner of the Spanish-speaking world, wherever Richard Stallman in person may fail to get. I hope we get to spread the word on the issues behind Free Software, the way rms has always done.

Finalmente, me enteré de que se le podían agregar subtítulos a un archivo de video digital de manera trivial: no se necesitaba ningún equipo en especial. Debido a que no había sido capaz de encontrar a alguien que tomara la tarea, decidí hacer este proyecto por mi mismo, y después de unos cuantos meses de trabajo en tiempo libre (y a veces no tan libre), terminé la labor y ahora estamos listos para llevar esta plática a cada esquina del mundo de habla hispana, donde sea que Richard Stallman no logre llegar en persona.

The video was converted from the proprietary RealVideo format, which is some 112 Mb in length to an AVI Mpeg4 Video with Mp3 audio, another propietary format, but better known. This was done because the seek function is not supported for RealVideo files on mplayer. The resulting AVI is 123 Mb in size, and we're looking for ways to make it even smaller. The process was done using mencoder with the following command:

El video fue convertido del formato propietario de RealVideo, el cual mide unos 112 Mb a un AVI con Mpeg4 en Video y Mp3 de audio, otro formato propietario, pero mejor conocido. Se hizo esto porque la función de búsqueda no está soportada para archivos RealVideo en mplayer. El AVI resultante mide 123 Mb, y estamos buscando maneras de hacerlo aún más chico. El proceso fue realizado usando mencoder con el siguiente comando:

So, to watch the video (2 hours in length), you need the video file and optionally a subtitles file. The subtitles were coded using the mpsub format, but we can provide any format supported by mplayer's dump functions upon request. The subtitle languages are now limited to English and Spanish.

Asi que, para ver el video (con 2 horas de duración), necesitan el archivo de video y opcionalmente un archivo de subtítulos. Los subtítulos fueron codificados usando el formato mpsub, pero podemos proveer bajo demanda cualquier formato soportado por las funciones de dump de mplayer. The use of mplayer to watch the video is highly recommended. We suggest the following command line:

This will show the video with a black band on the top where the subtitles will appear, for maximum contrast and where they will be closer to the speaker's face, which is where people tend to guide their eyes to once they are done reading.

Esto mostrará el video con una banda negra en la parte superior donde los subtítulos aparecerán, para un mayor contraste y donde estarán más cerca del rostro del ponente, que es a donde la gente tiende a llevar la mirada una vez que ha terminado de leer.

You can sum yourself to this effort by providing translated versions of the subtitles for other languages or a regionalized version of any language, or by sending patches with fixes for the currently available files. Portuguese is a particular language that would be very nice to have.

For translations, I recommend opening the stallman-mpsub.txt file on an EMACS buffer, then C-x 3, C-x o and creating there a new buffer, and finally use the M-x 2C-associate-buffer function to get a coordinated view between the left and right windows. Open M-x info -> Emacs -> Two-Column for help on this, and enjoy the power.
